چکیده

Regional-scale ecological restoration priorities such as increasing the extent and quality of native vegetation are generally planned at catchment scales, while on-ground restoration actions are generally implemented at paddock or farm scales. This paper describes the use of spatial multi-criteria assessment methodologies to construct maps of regional conservation priorities and assesses how these maps map influence farm-scale actions in Western Victoria, Australia (e.g. farm-scale revegetation for salinity, wind erosion, stock shelter, etc). The study also incorporates agricultural production in the decision analysis through the use of historical yield mapping data obtained from harvest logs from precision agriculture equipment. Via a stakeholder workshop, farmer land use priorities were elicited with and without access to maps of regional conservation priorities. Results highlight that production imperatives drive farmerled conservation actions and that regional conservation priorities have only limited impact on actions. The paper also identifies limitations of applying MCA methods across multiple decision-making scales such as the need to generalise priorities where domain knowledge is relatively high, and the challenges associated with MCA criteria definition. Can regional-scale conservation planning influence farm-scale actions?

Major sustainability challenges in agricultural landscapes include the loss of biodiversity, soil erosion from wind and water, and increasing rates of salinity. Other than relatively few exceptions such as the listing or enlargement of nature reserves and the establishment of large corridor plantings (e.g. biolinks in Australia), addressing these challenges generally occurs at the paddock scale...

Technical note: Water conservation in Kuwait: A fuzzy analysis approach

In an arid country like Kuwait with harsh and hot climate conditions, the scarcity of fresh water supplies presents a serious threat to sustainable socio-economic development and growth. Kuwait is an oil rich country with capital abundance and coastal locations enabled it to build desalination plants for fresh water production that is sold to the customers at highly subsidized prices. However, ...

Creating Wildlife Habitat Through Federal Farm Programs: An Objective-Driven Approach

Conservation programs administrated by the United States Department of Agriculture under the Farm Bill have tremendous potential to impact wildlife habitat and populations on private land. Recent comprehensive reviews demonstrate that private landowners who participate in these programs have established habitats that may contribute to sustaining some regional wildlife populations. However, I ar...

Evaluation and Prioritization of Criteria Affecting the Selection of Landscape Species, Using Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Systems

It is impractical to implement conservation efforts for all species due to complexity of natural systems, large scale of biodiversity issues, and budget limitations. Prioritizing species of conservation importance can alleviate this issue. Multiple interrelated criteria may be used for conservation prioritization of species. Therefore, the accurate evaluation of criteria is a multi-criteria dec...
